A new retail store has opened in downtown Utica – just in time for the holiday season and the Shop Local Macomb campaign. Located at 45161 Cass Avenue, is a destination for lovers of gently used home furnishings, quirky knick-knacks and kitchen gadgets. The store has long been a dream for owner Sharon Jackson-Hank. And this past year, following a career as an executive assistant, she decided it was time to pursue that passion.
“We had a soft opening in July and a grand opening celebration in October,” she said. “The support we have received from the community has been incredible.”
Sharon also receives support from her family, as Something Back in Time sells hand-crafted furniture made by her son and original art produced by her husband. Sharon’s 87-year-old mother is also involved – visiting the store as much as she can and giving input on vintage products. Those items include buffet tables, typewriters, cameras, glassware and books. Sharon even has an antique table that dates back to the 18th century.
“I like vintage pieces,” she said. “They just don’t make things like they used to.”
And when it comes to making things, Something Back in Time offers services that other retailers cannot match. Both Sharon’s son and husband can be commissioned to make original pieces for interested individuals. For instance, her son has made custom coffee tables for shoppers and her husband, who is an award-winning color pencil artist, has created images ranging from sports figures to pets. Needless to say, the store is a family affair.
If you’re in the market for any of these items this holiday season, be sure to visit Something Back in Time. The store will be open on Black Friday and Shop Small Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. (additional holiday hours can be found ). Sharon will also be setting up three Christmas trees and decorating them with vintage ornaments and toys. So if you’re looking for something unique, whether it be for yourself or someone else, make sure to stop in and support this new, local business.
